IELTS Listening Syllabus

You will listen to four recordings in different accents- two monologues and two conversations. There will be 40 questions in the IELTS listening. You will have 30 minutes to complete this section, and an additional 10 minutes will be given for transferring your solutions to the answer sheet. The audio will play once only.

  • Task 1: A conversation between two people set in an everyday social context. (For example, a conversation between a passenger and a flight attendant)
  • Task 2: A monologue set in an everyday social context (for example, a politician giving a speech on local facilities).
  • Task 3: A conversation between two or more people set in a research, training, or educational context (For example- a bunch of students discussing an assignment)
  • Task 4: A monologue on an academic subject (for example, a lecture in college about economics).

IELTS Reading Syllabus

The syllabus of IELTS reading section consists of three passages of general interest and relatable for students applying for a UG or PG program. Moreover, you need to identify the opinions, attitudes and purpose of the writers. There are 40 questions, and a variety of different types are used in this component to test different reading techniques, such as skimming and understanding the purpose of writing. The passage will come from a variety of sources, such as books, journals, newspapers, advertisements, official documents and company handbooks.

IELTS Writing Syllabus

The syllabus for IELTS writing Academic format includes two tasks where the topics are of general interest and relatable for students applying for a UG and PG program.

Moreover, the General Training format also contains two tasks that revolve around topics of general interest but are designed to assess aspirants’ capability to communicate effectively in common real-life conditions.

  • Task 1 (Academic Format): In this, you have to explain visual data like a graph or chart, using your own words. You must write at least 150 words within a 20-minute time frame, and you will be penalised if your answer is too short.
  • Task 1 (General Training): In this task, you respond to a situation, for example, by writing a letter asking for information or explaining a condition. You are asked to write at least 150 words within 20 minutes.
  • Task 2: In this, you are given a point of view, problem or argument you must address. Need to write at least 250 words within 40 minutes.

IELTS Speaking Syllabus

The IELTS speaking section evaluates your English speaking proficiency, and the duration of this part is 11-14 minutes. It is a structured interview with an emphasis on general speaking skills. Moreover, there is no specific question in this section as it is assessed on an interview basis.

  • Task 1: You will start with a general introduction to topics like home, education, family and work. The duration of the task is 4-5 minutes.
  • Task 2: In this task, the examiner gives you a cue card asking you to discuss a particular topic. The card includes the points for you to include in your talk and instructs you to explain one aspect of the topic. The duration of the task is 3-4 minutes to prepare your thoughts and talk.
  • Task 3: In the last task, the examiner will further discuss the Task 2 topic. The duration of this conversation is about 4-5 minutes.

Note: The speaking section can be evaluated before or after the other sections of the IELTS exam.
